Wangu privacy policy
Last updated 6 November 2026. Wangu is a budgeting app for one person, a couple, a family, housemates or friends sharing costs. This page explains, in plain English, what Wangu keeps, why, who can see it, and how to take it with you or delete it.
Who is responsible for your data
What Wangu keeps
- Your account: your email address and a securely stored password (Wangu never sees the password itself).
- Your profile: your name and date of birth, used to check you are 18 or over. Kept private to you.
- Your budget: the bills, income, spending budgets, spends, savings pots, notes and settings you add.
- Receipt photos you choose to attach.
- Change history: which record changed, when and by whom, so a household can see what happened. Kept for about 13 months.
- Reminders you switch on, and the device details needed to send them.
- AI credit counts (how many AI credits your household used this month), so plans stay fair.
- Subscription status if you pay for Plus or Pro: which plan, and when it renews. Card details are handled by our payment provider and never reach Wangu.
Wangu doesn't use advertising trackers or sell anything about you. It doesn't ask for your bank login. Bank connections are not offered today. If we add them in future, they will be optional and we will update this policy first.
Who can see what
- Your own bills, income, spending, pots and Tell Kitty history are private. Other people in your household see a bill's name and whether it's paid, never how much, unless you switch on “Show my amounts” in Settings. This is enforced by Wangu's database, not just hidden on screen.
- Shared bills, budgets and pots (ones split between people) show to everyone who shares them.
- Your household's invite code lets someone ask to join, and the owner approves them. Only share it with people you trust.
Wangu's AI
Some features (Tell Kitty, reading a receipt or statement, the money coach and the monthly review) send information to Anthropic's Claude to work out an answer. Wangu sends only what that feature needs: never your email address or invite code, other people's private amounts never leave the database, and long numbers that look like card numbers, account numbers or sort codes are removed first. Under its commercial terms Anthropic doesn't train its models on it and keeps it only for a short time. AI use is limited each month by a credit allowance that depends on your plan. You don't have to use the AI features to use Wangu.
Where it's kept
| Service | What for | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Your account, budget, receipts and backups | London, UK |
| Cloudflare | Hosting the website and the web app (no budget data) | Global network |
| Anthropic | AI answers, only when you use an AI feature | United States, under UK data transfer safeguards |
| Stripe | Card payments for paid plans on the web | Ireland and the United States, under UK data transfer safeguards |
| Apple | The iPhone app, Face ID, reminders and in-app purchases | On your device and Apple's servers |
Everything travels encrypted (HTTPS) and is stored encrypted. Wangu keeps a copy of each household each night for 14 days so it can recover from mistakes.
Why we use your data
To run the app you asked for (contract), to keep it secure and prevent misuse (legitimate interests), to take payment and keep financial records (legal obligation), and to send reminders you switched on (your consent, which you can withdraw in Settings).
Your choices and rights
- Download your data: Settings, Privacy and your data, Download my data (JSON) or a spreadsheet (CSV).
- Delete your account: Settings, Privacy and your data, Delete my account. If you're the only person in your Kitty, everything is deleted, including receipts. If you share it, your own records go and shared ones stay for the others. Nightly copies roll off within 14 days.
- Correct anything: edit it in the app at any time.
- Under UK data protection law you can also ask what we hold, object to how it's used, or complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
Children
Wangu accounts are for adults (18 and over).
